How to Start a Blogging Business When You’re Broke: The Magic of Profit from Zero

How to Start a Blogging Business When You’re Broke: The Magic of Profit from Zero

You know that feeling that you’ve completely lost control of the situation? That terrifying, groping-around-corners-in-the-dark sensation that accompanies the death of a really good plan you had?

That’s how my blogging business was born.

Around the time I was financially desperate enough to scrounge for stray dimes rather than use my debit card to pay for a coffee, I decided it was time to start a business.

There were a few things that led up to this decision. I wanted to be a freelance writer working out of cafes in Buenos Aires, but I was a broke intern in Chicago. To bridge that gap I accepted a full-time job with a salary and benefits, only to be laid off almost as soon as I’d started.

For me, that was that moment in life when you realize it’s time to take matters into your own hands. And you head back to the drawing board to examine the overwhelming options — none of which will actually fix your paralysis, because they’re all just steps in another plan that you have to create from scratch.

They say it takes money to make money, but I’d already lived for several months not knowing how I was going to pay the next month’s rent. I had to make something out of nothing, fast. Here’s how you work that instant blogging business magic:

Freelance Writer Websites for the Tech-Terrified Beginner

Freelance Writer Websites for the Tech-Terrified Beginner

Hands up if dealing with technology is not your strong point.

It’s OK. You don’t have to be a wizard of web development to get your freelance writer website up and running.

Here are three simple ways to get it done without driving yourself to tears:

  1. Hire a web design and development team [expensive]
  2. Learn to use WordPress and build your own website [takes a while]
  3. Use a ready-made solution designed specifically for freelance writers [phew!]

Let’s assume you can’t afford #1 and don’t really want to wrestle with #2. Moving on to #3, then: ready-made website services.

There are places you can set up a website without learning to write programming code or work a WordPress content management system. Some are free to use; others charge a fee for taking your website worries off your hands.

How to Launch Your Freelance Blogging Career [Even If Your Plans Fall Apart]

How to Launch Your Freelance Blogging Career [Even If Your Plans Fall Apart]

I’ve been freelancing off and on for over 20 years as a writer, user experience (UX) designer, and project manager, dipping in and out of the full-time workforce as my family requires. When I found Sophie’s blog on becoming a freelance blogger, it totally inspired me to go for it.

Here’s how I got my freelance blogging business off the ground despite some pretty big personal challenges, and how things changed from my original plan.

The Countdown Begins

On March 1, 2013, I had exactly 90 days before a long-term consulting contract ended, or so I thought.

At the end of 2012 I had quit my full-time job at an ad agency so I could spend more time with my 9-year-old daughter. I figured the consulting assignment would be a great opportunity to learn some new skills, make a steady income, and eventually make the transition to part-time freelancing.

28 Days of Win! Prize Contests for Freelance Bloggers

The winter holidays are a famously quiet time for most freelance writing businesses. Is yours the same?

It’s no surprise. Everybody’s busy shopping for gifts, planning their family time, and figuring out their taxes — so clients tend to delay hiring a new freelance blogger until the new year.

And the blogosphere is usually pretty quiet, too.

Not here. 🙂

For the next 28 days, my fantastic guest bloggers and I will keep a fire burning for you with daily posts and more than $2000 worth of prizes to give away. Your first chance to win is just a bit further down this post!
