The Shameless Blogging Success Secret No One Wants to Admit

The Shameless Blogging Success Secret No One Wants to Admit

If you’re anything like me, sometimes you want to punch the so-called “blogging gurus” in the face.

This is probably because you’ve done everything they’ve told you to do. You’ve implemented their social media strategies, and tweaked them for your own blog. You’ve written about controversial topics with a strong, original voice, and you’ve made your blog look clean and spiffy.

Yet no matter what you try, it always seems like a failure.

But guess what?

There’s something very important about all that work you’re doing, a blogging success secret that no one wants to talk about. And it all has to do with that ever-so-frustrating word: failure.

How to Be Addictive: Brain Science for Bloggers

How to Be Addictive: Brain Science for Bloggers

This isn’t rocket surgery.

Your readers have brains. And the human brain is inscrutable in many ways, but in one thing it’s gloriously predictable: everybody loves a good story.

A story is its own reward. You catch a piece of it, follow the invisible lines of the narrative, make your own predictions about what’ll happen next, feel the tingle of “I knew it!” or the jolt of “never saw that coming”… it’s like your brain’s running loose on a scavenger hunt. And it loves you for it, like a dog loves you for taking it to the park.

Reward, as far as your brain is concerned, involves releasing chemicals that make you feel happy, excited and keen to do it all over again. This is why people get addicted to things that are not typically thought of as addictive: shopping, sex, books, jogging, the Internet.

We call those “psychological addictions”, but  they aren’t all in the addict’s mind. They’re all in the brain, part of the nervous system and undeniably physical.

So, your audience has brains and brains can create addictions. Would you like your readers to keep coming back for more of your blog posts? Here’s how to get them hooked on your writing.

When Can You Call Yourself a Professional Blogger?

When Can You Call Yourself a Professional Blogger?

Labelling yourself a professional is an act many bloggers for hire won’t immediately embrace.

Mind-chatter like “I don’t have enough writing samples” or “my posts don’t get a lot of engagement” fuels a bloggers’ belief that you can’t —or worse, mustn’t— call yourself a pro.

But what does being a professional blogger really mean?

Do you need to have written X number of articles before you can call yourself a pro blogger?

To answer these questions, let’s dig into the habits and characteristics of well-known professional bloggers, and compare them to your own distinguishing traits.

6 Hooks That Make Your Blog Posts Irresistible

6 Hooks That Make Your Blog Posts Irresistible

Routinely writing about the same topic, category, or concept gets boring fast.

To keep your content fresh and engaging for readers, you need to incorporate content hooks that catch your readers’ attention and reel them in. We can call these “connection hooks”, because they’re ways to connect a concept to something else readers care about.

The next time you’re brainstorming an article idea, try building connections with your concept through one, or more, of these content connection hooks.

To help you see how these hooks work, I’ve included examples of how Be a Freelance Blogger uses them to connect you, the reader, with the concept of blog writing.

All Killer, No Filler: 6 Simple Tips for Concise Writing

All Killer, No Filler: 6 Simple Tips for Concise Writing

Brevity is the whatsit of thing.

You know the one I mean. Wit. Source. Other way around.

And conciseness, well, it’s similar only more important.

Conciseness is a skill that not enough bloggers take the time to develop. One that, if you demonstrate you’ve mastered it, will win you plenty of work even when other bloggers struggle to get hired.

It isn’t mere brevity. It isn’t only clarity. It’s a special, sparkling combination of the two that gives exactly the amount of information the reader needs, as briefly as possible without sacrificing any important details.

Say you have 500 words to write. You could write 500 smart, well-chosen words and make everyone (your readers, your clients, your editors, your bank) very happy. Or you could dish up 150 of the good stuff surrounded by 350 of fluff and redundancy.

A 3000-word epic blog post is still concise if every one of those words serves a purpose. Length is not the measure of conciseness. Value is.
