How to Launch Your Freelance Blogging Career [Even If Your Plans Fall Apart]

How to Launch Your Freelance Blogging Career [Even If Your Plans Fall Apart]

I’ve been freelancing off and on for over 20 years as a writer, user experience (UX) designer, and project manager, dipping in and out of the full-time workforce as my family requires. When I found Sophie’s blog on becoming a freelance blogger, it totally inspired me to go for it.

Here’s how I got my freelance blogging business off the ground despite some pretty big personal challenges, and how things changed from my original plan.

The Countdown Begins

On March 1, 2013, I had exactly 90 days before a long-term consulting contract ended, or so I thought.

At the end of 2012 I had quit my full-time job at an ad agency so I could spend more time with my 9-year-old daughter. I figured the consulting assignment would be a great opportunity to learn some new skills, make a steady income, and eventually make the transition to part-time freelancing.

7 Things I Learned About Freelance Blogging from Interviewing My Clients

7 Things I Learned About Freelance Blogging from Interviewing My Clients

During my time as a freelance writer, I’ve had the chance to speak to dozens of bloggers, entrepreneurs, and clients. Those conversations have often produced invaluable insights and taught me lessons that I would not have otherwise learned.

With the above in mind, I set about interviewing a number of people from different backgrounds for my freelance blogging guide, Paid to Blog. While I felt I could put together a complete guide on freelance blogging myself, I knew that including the thoughts and opinions of others would elevate the course to another level.

Besides many others, I ended up interviewing two of my clients. That’s right folks — I spoke to the very people who pay our bills to discover what they want from us. I thought their perspective would be refreshing and unique when complemented by my own experiences. I was right.

In this post, I’ve selected the most compelling and valuable points made in my interviews with them. Read on to see what I learned!

How to Find Time to Write a Book Even If You’re Busy Blogging

How to Find Time to Write a Book Even If You’re Busy Blogging

[Note from Sophie: Meet Timo Kiander, AKA Productive Superdad. I helped edit his new book of productivity tips for busy solopreneurs. Now he’s going to tell us how he found time to *write* the book.]

Back in September, my business coach Danny Iny ended our bi-weekly coaching call with a seemingly innocent question: “Timo, would you like to take your blog to another level?”

After I learned what “take your blog to another level” meant, it took me like a fraction of a second to say “yes.”

My coach asked me if I was willing to write a book related to the topic I was already blogging about — productivity.

Although I initially said “yes” to this proposal, I also had some concerns:

  • How would my family react to this, knowing that my days were already jam-packed with my day job and blogging?
  • What would happen to my sports activities? I’m a marathoner and a triathlete, and didn’t want to give that up.
  • How would I find time for my blog if I was going to write a book?

I felt each of those concerns was valid, so I had to find a way to crush those doubts and turn them into my strengths.

Your Blogging Audition: How to Pitch Like a Movie Star

Your Blogging Audition: How to Pitch Like a Movie Star

Ah, the blog post pitch!

The marketing cornerstone for any blogger who wants to have their voice heard in the blogosphere.

You know you’ve got to put yourself out there but just the thought of it makes your palms sweat. You fear creating something that’s junk in the eyes of a popular blogger: what if you’re not good enough?

You’re afraid you’ll be ignored or even laughed at. Controlling your nerves while writing the pitch is killing you, right? Your confidence is crashing even as you press the Send button…

Take a deep breath. Focus.

Being able to put words together in a coherent and catchy way is important. But to become visible and attractive to a large audience, there are so many character traits a blogger must possess to land that coveted gig or guest post.

Much like an actor auditioning for his big breakthrough. Besides talent and charisma to nail it, an actor needs preparation, confidence, resilience and focus.
