Can you think of a writing topic that weighs on people’s minds more than health?
It touches every aspect of our lives, every day… and that means you can find a way to pitch a health or wellness article to nearly ANY publication.
Lemme give you an example. When I say “freelance writing jobs at health and wellness blogs,” what comes to your mind?
Technical medical articles about new discoveries? How to get back into those slim-fit jeans? A story about a terrifying diagnosis and obstacle-ridden journey to recovery? How to juggle the challenges of aging parents? How to live with a pesky food sensitivity (and still eat your favorite foods)? And I’m just getting started…
If you’re a personal finance blogger and you want to break into health writing, you can pitch your editors ideas about how finances and health affect each other. If you’re a business blogger with an interest in wellness, you can blog about the return on investment in corporate wellbeing initiatives. Health and wellness are such universal topics, you can work them into your portfolio even if you’ve never written for a specifically health-centered blog.
Even better news: all of the sites listed in this post are open to pitches on health and wellness from freelance writers! And they pay rates ranging from $50 to hundreds (in some cases thousands) of dollars per article, so you can earn a good living from your work.
Do I Need to Be a Health Professional to Get Paid as a Freelance Health Writer?
Do I need to say it?
If you have any health or medical qualifications, you are sitting on a goldmine (if you want to write about your area of expertise).
Here’s the hard part…
Most people with these types of qualifications… ummm, how can we put it nicely… They’re not the most talented writers of online content. Not saying that talented and qualified medical writers don’t exist, but the world really could use WAAAAY more people with these combined skills!
Not to mention, most qualified health professionals are busy doing their jobs (and making plenty of money). They’re not looking for a side gig in health blogging.
So if you have a way with words and a passion for this niche, you don’t need to be the expert. You’ve got TONS of experts out there willing to give interviews, so all you need are your writing and research skills.
This niche is no different than any other from the writing point of view — you still have to do your research, cite your sources, and interview experts. (Ahem… you know this is part of the job NO MATTER what you write about, right?)
Can I Write about Controversial Health Topics for Blogs and Online Magazines?
IF the blog or magazine accepts your pitch, then you can. Some publications are eager to take on trending health topics that everyone doesn’t agree about. So if that’s your schtick, go for it — choose the right sites to pitch, and get ready to handle arguments in the comments section when your article is published!
No matter who you write for, you’ll need to give expert sources for any health facts or recommendations you include in your posts. This saves your editor the work of fact-checking your article from scratch, and it means your readers can follow your citations to dig deeper into the topics that interest them.
Even if the publisher doesn’t explicitly instruct you to cite your sources, cite them anyway — it’s your professional reputation on the line. (Any site publishing health articles without adequate, balanced research and source references is a Big Red Flag. Run away!)
And here are some great publications to pitch your health ideas…
