How to Build Your Side Gig Into a Full-Time Freelance Career

How to Build Your Side Gig Into a Full-Time Freelance Career

Being a part-time freelance writer at the same time as holding down another job can feel exhausting. Like, falling-asleep-on-your-keyboard exhausting.

But when the alternative is to give up writing and focus on your day job, somehow you find the time and energy for freelance blogging work after all. Being a writer matters to you; you’d write even if nobody was paying.

The big question, then, is can you make freelance writing pay your living?

And the answer is yes, you can — if you do it right.

How to Build Your Side Gig Into a Full-Time Freelance Career [prize contest!]

Finding out exactly what’s right for you and your career usually involves some wrong turns and course corrections along the way. And it helps if you’ve got common-sense guidance to see you through the tricky parts of setting up a freelance business!

Alexis Grant is a successful entrepreneur who offers a huge range of expert guides and training courses for freelancers, with a focus on writers. If you’re looking for career tips, she’s your library. [That’s why I invited her to teach my students how to make Twitter work for them in my Freelance Blogger’s Client Hunting Masterclass.]

Here’s what she wrote about breaking out of her day job and turning her side gig into a fully-fledged freelance business:

On several occasions, I thought about leaving my day job to pursue my business full time. But… quite frankly, I didn’t see how it would work financially.

Alexis Grant, Turn Your Side Hustle Into a Full-Time Business & Surpass Your Day Job Income in Just 6 Months

Alexis learned a lot while freelance writing and social media strategy were merely sidelines to her career as a journalist. Then she used that knowledge to turn her freelance business into her only business and make it work.

Now you can learn her methods and do the same. 🙂

    Hey Sophie!

Firstly, I’d like to say this 28 days of Christmas is an awesome idea, you definitely put a lot of thought into it and setting it all up right. This may be the first one I’ve entered but I really like the simplicity of the tweet and I love how effective that is to gain extra reach for yourself and Alexis, simple but really clever.

    Secondly, I hope I win 🙂

Hope you’ve had a great Christmas and have an even better New years!

    To success in 2014.

    Cheers,

    Jackson

I would love to win a copy of this book. I quit my day job over a year ago in pursuit of a writing career. I could use some help in boosting my revenue, as I have yet to make what I was making as an accounting manager.

I’m in– thanks Sophie- I am fairly new to your blog, but wow, what a blessing! I had a pretty good freelance business building a few years ago, but I made some rookie mistakes and pretty much took myself out of the game. I am ready to get started again, and just need to get my courage up and then fix what I broke. LOL

Hello Sophie : ) One of the comments above stated you’ve ‘surpassed yourself’ with this contest. I wholeheartedly agree. You’re a giver and I am one of the many who has been blessed time and again from your teachings, your interviews and even your ‘favors’ ; ). Anything you promote, or recommend is stellar and has helped me every single time. I look forward to much more of your recommendations throughout 2014.
