How Nude Photos Convinced Clients to Hire a Blogger With a Shocking Past

How Nude Photos Convinced Clients to Hire a Blogger With a Shocking Past

Would you hire someone to represent your business if you knew they had a background as a nude model?

Maybe you would. [Have I told you today how awesome you are?]

And maybe you wouldn’t. It’s cool — I understand some people are put off by the idea.

Not my clients, though. Some of them are amused that I once posed naked halfway up a tree, or perching in a giant birdcage.

I used my background as a pin-up model and burlesque dancer to win one of my first writing gigs, with an upmarket lingerie retailer who was impressed by my knowledge of garter belts and stocking seams.

The client checked out my modelling portfolio to confirm my expertise, and the photos in which I wore nothing but retro stockings and a garter belt sealed the deal. They were pleased to have a hosiery-obsessed pin-up write articles for their website, and I was proud to work with them.

Being a photographic model was fun and paid well, but writing has become even more profitable for me. Here’s why.

11 Ways to Boost Your Confidence on the Phone to Prospective Clients

11 Ways to Boost Your Confidence on the Phone to Prospective Clients

So you sent the perfect query letter to your ideal client — the one whose blog you practically dream about writing for (that doesn’t make you a loser, right? Right.) — and you’re so freakin’ excited because they want to hire you!

But… not until they’ve spoken to you on the phone first.

Ah, shit.

Knowing you’re actually going to have to talk to somebody, using your own voice and your own brain full of your own thoughts, is terrifying. What if you ramble on, or stutter, or say something completely moronic that ruins your chances of ever being hired by anyone EVER AGAIN?

Fact is, some people simply will not hire you without talking to you first, either on the phone or via Skype. [Skype? Video calls? Double aargh!]

They want to hear your voice, know you’re trustworthy —professional— and that you are who you say you are. Basically, they want to get a feel for you (minds out of the gutter, please). More importantly, they want to know you’re going to be able to do the job justice. That you know the subject, can write about it in an informed manner, and have your own insightful comments to add.

And the worst part is, you know you can do it… you’re just not sure you can convince somebody of that over the phone. After all, you’re a writer, not a speaker. Shouldn’t your written words be enough, damn it?

Sadly not, mon petit pois. But fortunately, there are a few things you can do to up your on-the-phone game. Here are 11 tips to boost your chances of being hired to write for your dream blog (or, you know, any blog) over the phone:

Ever think of borrowing my clients? They pay pretty good.

Seriously, borrow my clients. Go ahead.

Is something wrong? You look kinda confused. [No, I’m not watching you through the magical powers of the internet. I’m just imagining the expression on your face right now.]

7 Clever Moves to Land Freelance Blogging Clients If English Is Not Your First Language

7 Clever Moves to Land Freelance Blogging Clients If English Is Not Your First Language

Consistent cash flow is what all freelance bloggers want.

But good-paying clients seem to be the most aloof people on the planet. And if you’re a freelance blogger whose first language is not English, you can’t help but feel this pursuit is made even more difficult for you.

On the other hand, if you really want to level up, you’ll do what you can to stand out and be noticed.

If this is you and you’re up for the challenge, keep reading while I share how I succeeded as a blogger even though English is not my mother-tongue. That’s right, I’m giving you permission to steal my moves.

“Freelancers Are Unreliable!” How to Show Your Clients You Won’t Let Them Down

“Freelancers Are Unreliable!” How to Show Your Clients You Won’t Let Them Down

Okay, you’ve seen the headline so maybe my question is a bit pointless, but what would you guess is the #1 objection clients have with freelancers?

Is “lack of reliability” high on the list? It should be, because that’s exactly what your prospective clients think.

If you need proof, here are a couple of quotes from business owners about their dealings with freelancers (and this is only the beginning… plenty more quotes later in this post):

“Firms have relatively more to lose (reputation, lawsuit), so while freelancers are cheaper, quality and reliability are also lower with freelancers.”

-Vlad Solodovnyk, business owner in web and mobile development

“Firms are more process oriented which means that there are checks and balances in place and the delivery is not dependent on skill or mood of individual.”

-Sameer Jain, business owner in software development

Maybe I’ve been living under a rock or something, but for me, seeing these opinions was somewhat a surprise. I didn’t think we had such a shady reputation. And the rep itself isn’t even the worst thing here. The worst thing is that it almost certainly has an impact on the success of our businesses.

Some business owners simply don’t believe that the average freelancer can be trusted with a project.

This opinion hasn’t been dreamt out of thin air. The people who think this way have been burnt by freelancers in the past — or heard horror stories from someone whose freelancer let them down — and now they’re afraid all freelancers are the same.
