How to Write Epic Shit for Your Clients: A Gonzo Blogging Guide

How to Write Epic Shit for Your Clients: A Gonzo Blogging Guide

Do you write epic content for your clients? The kind of content that readers will bookmark and come back to again and again?

If you do, great! I expect you to weigh in in the comments. If you don’t write epic content, why not?

Building a popular blog for your clients involves two things: promotion and writing brilliant content. Content that blows the audience’s minds, challenges and inspires them with the crazy value you provide.

To help your client’s blog truly stand out, to help them build a raving audience of fans, you need to write epic shit. It works. For our purposes that’s all we need to know. Usefulness, emotional engagement and uniqueness win.

The Internet is full of junk. Don’t add to it. Write epic shit. In this post I’ll show you how to make your personal experience an asset, integral to the amazingness of the article, rather than something to strip away leaving only deadened objectivity.

You’re an Expert (And Don’t You Forget It)

You’re an Expert (And Don’t You Forget It)

There’s this thing that keeps happening.

Not to you. To me. For once, I’m starting a blog post by talking about myself… but only so I can talk about you.

Yeah, you. The one who says you don’t know what you have to offer a client, or what your specialist expertise might be.

It keeps happening. I have conversations that go something like this:

BAFB READER: I recently started freelance writing and I don’t really feel confident asking for money because I don’t know much about anything. I’m not an expert, I’m just a writer. And I’m scared to send any queries in case I get rejected. Or in case I don’t get rejected. Or in case I get writer’s block after I’ve been hired. Or in case I just can’t handle the pressure of a writer’s life and go crazy like Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

ME: Oh. OK. So, um, what did you do before you started freelance writing?

BAFB READER: Oh, I was a professor in advanced examples at the University of Examples. Then I spent a couple of years as an examples artist at the Example Institute for Impressive Examples.

ME [With restraint.]: So… did you ever think that maybe you could get started by writing about… you know… examples?

How To Double Your Rates Without Scaring Off Your Clients

How To Double Your Rates Without Scaring Off Your Clients

Imagine for a moment that you’re driving down the highway and you’re low on fuel.

You pull off at the next exit and see two gas stations. To your surprise, the one on the right side of the street wants $4 a gallon, but on the left side of the street they’re only asking for $2.

Where are you going to fill up?

For most of us, the answer’s obvious: at the cheaper station. After all, gas is a commodity. Shell and Exxon both sell the same product, no matter how hard they try to differentiate themselves.

So why do we question why our clients balk when we try to command a higher price or reach beyond the invisible ceiling of “market rates”? If all we’re selling is words, why should they pay you twice as much as what I’m proposing?

Why Your Guest Posts Keep Getting Rejected

Why Your Guest Posts Keep Getting Rejected

For those of you who don’t know, my name is Lauren Tharp and I was the Be A Freelance Blogger official Community Helper for quite a while. (And I’m trying my very best to not let my moderate amount of power go to my head…)

Basically, I helped answer comments and questions on the blog and social media, and I was in charge of guest posts/writers for the blog. That’s right: I’m the one who made sure your guest post got uploaded into the BAFB backend, didn’t have any typos or weird grammatical errors, included your author bio and appropriate links, and was otherwise magnificent. 🙂

I was also the person you had to pitch your ideas to.

Yeah…

Anyone who wanted to write for Be A Freelance Blogger had to write to me first with their pitch. From there, I made the decision to reject your query outright or send you along to Sophie (the gal you really have to impress). I was the first gatekeeper.

I loved my job. But sometimes it made me a little sad. Out of all the writers who pitch, only 10-15% of them actually made it to the next step. I had to reject a lot of pitches.

7 Things I Learned About Freelance Blogging from Interviewing My Clients

7 Things I Learned About Freelance Blogging from Interviewing My Clients

During my time as a freelance writer, I’ve had the chance to speak to dozens of bloggers, entrepreneurs, and clients. Those conversations have often produced invaluable insights and taught me lessons that I would not have otherwise learned.

With the above in mind, I set about interviewing a number of people from different backgrounds for my freelance blogging guide, Paid to Blog. While I felt I could put together a complete guide on freelance blogging myself, I knew that including the thoughts and opinions of others would elevate the course to another level.

Besides many others, I ended up interviewing two of my clients. That’s right folks — I spoke to the very people who pay our bills to discover what they want from us. I thought their perspective would be refreshing and unique when complemented by my own experiences. I was right.

In this post, I’ve selected the most compelling and valuable points made in my interviews with them. Read on to see what I learned!
